Joint
IUCN/FAO/TRAFFIC publication: Links
between Biodiversity Conservation, Livelihoods
and Food Security - the sustainable use of wild
species for meat. FRENCH
VERSION / VERSION FRANCAISE
IUCN-The World Conservation
Union, Gland, Switzerland, 01.07.02.
Wild animal populations and consequently, the
livelihoods of people in many countries are
threatened by the escalating unsustainable use
of wild species for meat. This is driven by
human population growth, poverty, and consumer
preferences, and aggravated by many other problems
including those of inappropriate governance.
Although many initiatives are
underway relating to conservation of wild meat
resources, these generally involve conservation
and development groups working alone. Links
Between Biodiversity Conservation, Livelihoods
and Food Security: the sustainable use of wild
species for meat, launched today, signals
a new era of urgently needed cross-sectoral
collaboration in combating the problem. This joint publication of IUCN
and its Species Survival Commission, the United
Nations Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO) and TRAFFIC,
the wildlife trade monitoring network, is available
in English and French. It presents the results
of a workshop held in Cameroon in September
2001 which brought together, and forged links
between, the species conservation, food security,
community development, and private sector communities.
The proceedings provide examples
of some of the species threatened, the situation
in different regions of the world, the impact
on livelihoods and on national economies, and
responses planned or already being implemented.
It contains a summary of workshop discussions
related to problems and solutions, and forms
a framework for future action. By distributing the publication
to broad audiences, and making it available
on the Internet, IUCN, FAO and TRAFFIC are calling
for greater input in finding and implementing
practical solutions. The workshop findings were made
available at the Conference of the Parties to
the Convention on Biological Diversity in April.
They were also tabled at the World Food Summit
in June, and will be tabled at the World Summit
on Sustainable Development in September. For more information contact:
