Species Information Service

The Vision: A world in which current and universally accessible biodiversity information encourages and promotes the achievement of effective conservation and sustainable forms of development.

Through its volunteer membership of 7,000 species conservation experts, SSC holds what is probably the world's most complete body of information on the status and distribution of species threatened with extinction. Although abundant, the data and information contained within the SSC network is widely dispersed and sometimes difficult to access. The Species Information Service is being developed as SSC's data management initiative to address this problem.

The SIS aims to become a worldwide species information resource (interlinked databases of species-related information managed by SSC's network of Specialist Groups). It will be easily accessible to the conservation and development communities including scientists, natural resource managers, educators, decision-makers and donors, and will contribute to integrated biodiversity conservation products.
