IUCN Red List of Threatened Species

The 2006 update of The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (TM) was launched in May this year. The next update of the IUCN Red List will be in the first quarter of 2007.
In 2006, the number of known threatened species surpassed 16,119. The ranks of those facing extinction were joined by familiar species like the polar bear, hippopotamus and desert gazelles; together with ocean sharks, freshwater fish and Mediterranean flowers. Positive action has helped the white-tailed eagle and offers a glimmer of hope to Indian vultures. Search the database Read the media package

Global Species Assessment 2004
The GSA is a comprehensive analysis of Red List and biodiversity assessment data. It is released every four years at the World Conservation Congress. The first GSA was released in Bangkok in 2004, and was the most thorough evaluation ever of the status of the world’s species. The next will be released in 2008 at the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Assessments
SSC is working with partners to cover key taxonomic groups. The Biodiversity Assessment Initiative has been established as a collaborative effort between IUCN/SSC and the Center for Applied Biodiversity Science at Conservation International. It aims to provide an effective method for gathering and disseminating the most accurate scientific data available for biodiversity conservation.
Indicators
Rising to the global challenge of reducing biodiversity loss by 2010 requires tools to monitor our progress and highlight where we need to focus our conservation efforts. Red List Indices, or Indicators, will play a vital role in tracking progress towards this target.

SSC Publications
The SSC publishes Action Plans, conservation policy guidelines and recommendations, occasional papers and monographs, regional and species-specific assessments of species and of course, The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. SSC Publications Index
Policies and guidelines
IUCN SSC publishes conservation guidelines and policy documents related to species conservation, trade and sustainable use. For an index of documents click here.
Species case studies
The case studies are short profiles of threatened species accompanied by a photo. They highlight the success or decline of plants and animals. Feel free to use them to illustrate the plight and challenges of saving threatened species. (Please credit photographers appropriately.)
Photo gallery
The Red List website gallery displays medium sized photos of threatened animals and plants and short summaries of their conservation status. For a wider selection try ARKive, a digital library with films, photographs and audio recordings of the world’s species.
