| Guiding SSC into the 21st century |

SSC's Strategic Plan (2001–2010) provides the building blocks for the work of the Commission and lays out the guiding vision, goal and three main objectives.
A world that values and conserves present levels of biodiversity.
The extinction crisis and massive loss in biodiversity are universally adopted as a shared responsibility, resulting in action to reduce this loss of diversity within species, among species and of ecosystems.
1. Decisions and policies affecting biodiversity influenced by sound interdisciplinary scientific information;
2. Modes of production and consumption that promote the conservation of biodiversity adopted by users of natural resources;
3. Capacity increased to provide timely, innovative, and practical solutions to conservation problems.
The Plan places SSC on a firm operational footing for the coming decade. It shows how the Commission, through its species expertise, is contributing to the wider biodiversity conservation agenda of IUCN and the targets of the Union's (quadrennial) Programme adopted at the 3rd IUCN World Conservation Congress in 2004. Clear and measurable priority targets, which SSC wants to attain are outlined, emphasising that the Commission working in cooperation can be more effective than individual Specialist Groups pursuing their own programmes. The Plan provides guidance to Specialist Groups on Commission-wide targets to which they need to contribute and general priority themes and issues they should concentrate on in their individual programmes.
