IUCN
Pakistan - Social Policy Web Resources
The IUCN Pakistan Programme has developed
several web resources relating to their social policy work, including
development information and news, conservation strategies, and discussion
lists.
Sarhad Provincial
Conservation Strategy (SPCS)
http://www.spcs.iucnp.org
The Sarhad Provincial Conservation Strategy (SPCS) 1995-98
is a statement of commitment by the government and people of the North
West Frontier Province (NWFP) to move forward with an effective programme
of sustainable development. It is the principal plan for implementing
the National Conservation Strategy (NCS) in the NWFP. It is both a comprehensive
statement of provincial aspirations for sustainable development and a
commitment package containing major policy statements, law-reform initiatives,
structural improvements and programmes. Special features of this information
rich website include a downloadable newsletter, an Urdu and Pushto languages
section; and a children’s' corner to make them environmentally aware
through articles and quizzes. The complete text containing the 18 chapters
of the SPCS document is available on this site.
Balochistan Conservation
Strategy (BCS)
http://www.bcs.iucnp.org
The Balochistan Conservation Strategy (BCS) was prepared
by the government of Balochistan with the technical assistance of IUCN
– The World Conservation Union. It is a strategic plan designed
to define and address the issues affecting the socio-economic development
of Balochistan, through the sustainable use of its natural resources.
The BCS aims to devise ways and means to weave environment and natural
resource conservation with development and to recommend an institutional
framework that will bring ownership, sustainability and efficiency in
management of these vital endowments. The BCS focuses on an action programme
to be implemented over the next 10 years. The report has three parts,
and all twenty-three chapters, together with twelve maps and seven appendices,
can be downloaded from this website.
Northern Areas Strategy
for Sustainable Development (NASSD)
http://www.northernareas.org.pk/nassd
In response to socio-economic, environmental and population
growth concerns, the Northern Areas Administration (NAA) began the preparation
of a Northern Areas Strategy for Sustainable Development (NASSD) in 1999.
Completed in 2002, it seeks to provide a comprehensive policy framework
for the sustainable development of the Northern Areas. It also responds
directly to the provisions and recommendations of the National Conservation
Strategy, adopted by the Government of Pakistan in 1992. ASSD's sixteen
background papers can be downloaded from this website. A list of stakeholders
and relevant contact information is also available online.
Chitral Conservation
Strategy (CCS)
http://www.ccs.iucnp.org
Initiated in 1997, the Chitral Conservation Strategy
(CCS) is an initiative for harnessing and improving the capabilities of
the people and institutions in Chitral, in the pursuit of enhancing their
livelihoods and quality of life through the optimum use of natural resources;
while continually improving their productivity within a decentralized
system of development planning. Stakeholders involved in discussions include
the government of NWFP, civil society, academia, media, public sector,
NGOs and private sector. Downloadable studies include indigenous resource
management; aquatic biodiversity; and migratory livestock. Sector papers
cover agriculture; biodiversity; cultural heritage and ecotourism; drinking
water; energy; forests and grazing lands; human resources; infrastructure;
irrigation; micro enterprises and solid waste management. An Urdu section,
information about the Sarhad Provincial Conservation Strategy (SPCS) and
related links are available on this information-rich website.
Abbottabad Conservation

the promotion of sustainable development of natural resources and the
preservation of the living environment and matters related to it. This
website describes its link with the devolution plan of the Government
of Pakistan, and the process involved in developing the ACS. Details of
its activities, consultations, projects, and status of seventeen sectoral
strategy papers are available online. Stakeholders include civil society
NGOs, academia, media, community based organizations, special interest
groups and the government.
Gender and Sustainable
Development Discussion List
http://lists.isb.sdnpk.org/mailman/listinfo/gsd-list
A discussion list on issues of gender and sustainable
development in the context of Pakistan. The debate on environmental sustainability
and security pertains to every member of the human ecosystem. Gender concerns
inevitably become part of this debate. Consciously addressing these concerns
is a challenge, since most of the times it is perceived that gender concerns
are implicitly integrated or the issues are gender neutral. In order to
avoid the danger of missing out on effective gender integration in environmental
sustainability and security the persistent gap of information needs to
be filled. This list is an attempt to plug-in these very gaps. The archives
of the list can also be accessed through the web.
Pakistan Development
Gateway
http://www.pdg.org
The Pakistan Development Gateway is a portal for development
information and news related to Pakistan, set up and maintained by the
Sustainable Development Networking Programme (SDNP), a project working
under the IUCN Pakistan Programme. Pakistani and international information
resources are indexed under different development categories. These include
advocacy; agriculture, forestry and fisheries; area development; communication
and information; culture; development administration; economic development;
education; energy; environment; gender; governance; health; human resource
development; humanitarian assistance, relief and disaster management;
human settlements; industry; knowledge management; natural resources;
political affairs; population; poverty alleviation; science and technology;
social development; trade and development and transportation. News and
discussion forums on wide -ranging development topics are also available
on this site.
