Social
Policy Work of IUCN Pakistan
IUCN Pakistan (IUCNP) has been engaged in social policy
work through two main channels: the national, provincial and district
level conservation strategies, and its field projects in the country.
Starting
from the key role it played in the formulation of the Pakistan National
Conservation Strategy (NCS), IUCNP helped the North West Frontier Province
(NWFP) and the Balochistan province formulate their conservation strategies.
Recently it has worked with stakeholders in Pakistan’s Northern
Areas to develop the Northern Areas Strategy for Sustainable Development
(NASSD). In addition, it has also been working in two districts of NWFP
to help formulate district level conservation strategies – the Chitral
Conservation Strategy (CCS) and the Abbottabad Conservation Strategy (ACS).
IUCNP has also been involved in helping to implement these strategies.
The IUCN Pakistan Programme has developed several web
resources relating to their social policy work, including development
information and news, conservation strategies, and discussion lists. For

The other major dimension of IUCNP’s social policy
work has been through its field projects, especially the Environmental
Rehabilitation in NWFP and Punjab (ERNP) and the Mountain Area Conservancy
Project (MACP).
MOUNTAIN AREA CONSERVANCY PROJECT
The goal of the Mountain Areas Conservancy Project (MACP)
of IUCN Pakistan is to protect biodiversity and ensure its sustainable
use in Pakistan’s Karakorum, Hindu Kush, and Western Himalayan mountain
ranges through a community-based conservation approach. MACP is based
on the premise that conservation activities are unlikely to be sustainable
over the long term unless local communities are actively involved.

ENVIRONMENTAL REHABILITATION
IN NWFP AND PUNJAB (ERNP)
The goal of the ERNP project in Pakistan is to halt and
reverse the ongoing process of environmental degradation. In line with
the National Conservation Strategy (NCS) of Pakistan, the project methodology
is based on the use of integrated measures of rehabilitation of natural
resources and sustainable socio-economic development. Thus the fundamental
approach is the full involvement of the local population in the management
of the resources on which they depend.
