Mitigation
Stabilizing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations
Supporting the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change
Governments and businesses are starting to take greater
responsibility for their greenhouse gas emissions, but the targets
agreed so far are too modest to have a signifi cant impact. IUCN
will contribute to the post-2012 negotiations, guiding policies
and laws, and building consensus for greater commitments.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and
ecosystem degradation
The Union promotes practical solutions to reduce emissions
from deforestation and ecosystem degradation. It provides the knowledge
for sound natural resource management which can stem biodiversity
loss and enhance carbon sequestration.
Energizing the future, naturally
IUCN promotes regional dialogues and standards to ensure
emerging energy alternatives such as biofuels are ecologically and
socially sustainable.

Adaptation
Enhancing the capacity of natural ecosystems to adapt to climate
change
Improving coral reef resilience to climate change
Coral reefs are one of the most climate-sensitive ecosystems.
IUCN bridges the gap between scientists and resource managers to
fi nd ways of increasing the resilience of coral reefs and of the
communities that depend on them.
Assessing and mapping the vulnerability of protected areas
The Union assesses the vulnerability of World Heritage
sites and other protected areas and develops strategies to reduce
the impacts of climate change on them.
Identifying and addressing species at greatest risk
IUCN, through its Red List of Threatened Species identifies
which plants and animals are most at risk of extinction through
climate change and promotes ways to conserve them
