CURRENT ACTIVITIES
Meeting the Challenges
Implementation of the Deep Sea Programme
This is a joint IUCN/ WWF initiative funded by J.M. Kaplan Fund to advance marine conservation in areas beyond national jurisdiction. It is a major initiative to evaluate the potential of establishing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the high seas as a preventative measure before driving the hotspots of biodiversity and rare species to extinction.
Designing and implementing informational tools
Based on field experience and case studies, the GMP is developing guidelines and technical manuals on integrated coastal management, ecosystem approaches to marine biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, and sustainable financing of marine conservation.
Field Studies :
COREMAP Programme
This programme assists Indonesia in managing its coral reefs, key areas for much of the world’s biological diversity. This is arguably the largest marine conservation programme to date, providing an excellent learning opportunity of MPA management for future implementation.
Guanabara Bay Project in Brazil
The two main components of this project consist of piloting of pollution control technologies and the production of a decision support system to aid in the rehabilitation of marine areas.
Coral Reef Degradation Project in the Indian Ocean
The project will assess the extent of coral bleaching, recovery, and determine possible rehabilitation, as well as the socio-economic impacts, and exploring alternative livelihood possibilities for affected people by involving 50 scientists in 12 countries.
MPA Capacity Building Project in the Mediterranean
The goal is to reach as many of the recently established marine park officials as possible and to pilot the use of improved training materials.
