ARO - Asia Regional Office

The IUCN Asia Regional Office, established by IUCN in 1999, covers 23 countries stretching from Pakistan in the West to Japan in the East, from Mongolia in the North to Indonesia in the South. It is one of nine regional offices of IUCN and consists of a number of integral regional and country programmes.

Established in 1997, the Asia Regional Forest Programme is one of the oldest regional thematic programmes in Asia. Over half its work is related in some way to forest conservation. Its goal, in line with that of the IUCN FCP is the maintenance and, where necessary, restoration of forest ecosystems to promote conservation and sustainable management of forests, and equitable distribution of a wide range of forest goods and services.

The programme works in five thematic areas:

  • Collaborative management of forests outside of Protected Areas' (PAs) landscapes

  • Forest fire management

  • National Protected Area System planning/Trans-boundary PA management

  • Restoration and rehabilitation of degraded forest landscapes

  • Sustainable and equitable use of non-timber forest products
