arborvitæ Specials

arborvitæ specials are published jointly by IUCN and WWF as occasional supplements to the arborvitæ newsletter in order to focus on specific opportunities and threats that impact on the conservation and sustainable use of forest resources that cannot be dealt with adequately in the main newsletter.

Changing Realities: Ecosystem Approaches and Sustainable Forest Management
(November 2004)

This arborvitæ special presents the summarized output of a study undertaken by IUCN, PROFOR and the World Bank to review and clarify the relationship between the Ecosystem Approach (EsA) and Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) and looks at how EsA principles have been interpreted and put into practice in different countries around the world and the impact that they have had.

Management Effectiveness of Protected Areas
Manejo efectivo de Áreas Protegidas
L'efficacité de la gestion des Aires Protégées (January 2000)

A three-language arborvitæ supplement reporting on the International Workshop on Management Effectiveness of Protected Areas, including the subsequently revised draft principles for protected area assessment.

Forest Harvest: Mediterranean woodlands and the importance of non-timber forest products to forest conservation (October 1999)

There is a long history of sustainable use of non-timber forest products (NTFPs), carried out in balance with forest ecosystems, throughout the Mediterranean. These systems of sustainable production can still enhance forest conservation in the region. However, to integrate NTFP production into Mediterranean forest conservation activities, questions related to NTFP ecology and harvesting need to be answered. This arborvitæ supplement investigates these issues and proposes a draft strategy for the commercialisation of NTFPs in the region.

Forest Conservation priorities for Africa and Madagascar Conservation des forêts: Priorité pour L'Afrique et Madagascar (October 1999)

This arborvitæ supplement details the key conservation priorities for Africa and Madagascar set by the WWF Africa Forest Forum in 1998. The meeting identified priority ecoregions for forest conservation, drew up a list of conservation targets and proposals for regional priorities and an overall strategy for the continent as a whole.

Voyages of Discovery: Four lessons from the DGIS-WWF Tropical Forest Portfolio (May 1999)

An arborvitæ supplement discussing the lessons learnt to date from the DGIS-WWF Tropical Forest Portfolio project. The project aims to understand what works, and perhaps more importantly what does not, in the implementation of integrated conservation and development projects (ICDPs).

Metals from the Forest: Mining and Forest Degradation - Los bosques y sus minerales: Minería y degradación forestal - Les métaux issus de la forêt: Développement minier et dégradation de forêts (January 1999)

An arborvitæ supplement, in English, French and Spanish, summarising research into the impacts of mining on the world's forests. The report first presents five case studies across world areas either already affected or under heavy pressure by metal mining interests. It goes on to discuss production trends, actors and impacts of the metal mining industry. Finally, it looks at existing elements of progress towards more sustainable practices, and after assessing gaps it proposes key principles for solutions.

Boreal forests: policy challenges for the future (January 1998)

In 1997 IUCN launched an important new temperate and boreal forest programme. This arborvitæ supplement introduced the ecology and status of the boreal forests, summarises some of the main threats, and proposes key elements in a conservation strategy.
