Ensuring sustainable and efficient management of ecosystems, integrating social, economic and environmental aims at local, national and transboundary levels.

Towards this endeavour, the Union draws on the vast, global network of its Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM) supported by the Ecosystem Management Programme (EMP).

The Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM)

The Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM) is one of IUCN’s six scientific Commissions. CEM is a network of about 500 volunteer ecosystem management experts from around the world. The Commission works closely with other IUCN Commissions, regional offices and global thematic programmes. CEM and its individual members are involved in a wide range of Ecosystem Management activities. CEM is supported by the Ecosystem Management Programme and its Secretariat both located at the IUCN Headquarters in Gland, Switzerland.

The Ecosystem Management Programme (EMP)
The Ecosystem Management Programme was launched in 2002 to support the work of IUCN’s scientific Commission on Ecosystem Management. It supports the work of the Commission and works across the different Programmes of IUCN working on ecosystem management (see also The IUCN EMP Intersessional Programme 2005-2008).
