YOUR OPINION ON THE NEXT CEESP CHAIR (2009-2012)

Dear CEESP members,

The Executive Committee of CEESP met on 29 and 30 October 2007 at IUCN Hq. and reviewed the nominations received from our members for the next CEESP Chair.  Two persons have signaled their willingness to accept the nomination: Dr. Richard Cellarius and Ms. Aroha Te Pareake Mead.

The ExCo further instructed Grazia Borrini-Feyerabend to prepare a list of questions and submit those to the two candidates.  The list of questions and the replies received from the candidates are appended and hot-linked below.

QUESTIONS FOR THE CANDIDATES TO THE CHAIR of CEESP in 2009-2012

  • What are, in your view, the crucial challenges for CEESP in 2009-2012?
  • How could CEESP best reply to those challenges and fulfill its role?
  • Does your view fit the current structure of CEESP in 7 Themes (see http://www.iucn.org/themes/ceesp/index.html and  http://www.iucn.org/themes/ceesp/About/About-CEESP.htm) reconfirmed during the CEESP Steering Committee in The Hague (March 2007)?
  • Do you agree with the collegial governance model of the current CEESP, whereby Themes Chairs are in control of their technical areas and financial allocations?
  • What are the crucial values you would pursue, as Councilor, for the governance of the Union?
  • One of the most sensitive areas for CEESP involvement in the future is the relationship between the Union and the private sector.  What is your position with regard to this?  To make the question more concrete, what are your recommendations regarding the current agreement between the IUCN and Shell?
  • Have you already identified and contacted a possible Deputy Chair?  If so, who is the person and how, in your view, will she/he complement and strengthen your candidature?
  • Where will you base your CEESP Executive Officer?  How will you make sure that the person maintains closely in touch with both Hq. staff and the Theme Chairs?
  • What are, in your view, the main weaknesses of your candidature?
  • What are the main strengths?
  •  What is at the heart of your commitment for conservation and equity?
  • Why would you like to be Chair of CEESP?

CEESP Members should know that there is still time to offer new nominations: see the letter here, but only up to January 27
T
he new Nominees should also send in their answers to the questions above to Grazia Borrini-Feyerabend (gbf@cenesta.org)
