Chair's Corner

The number of news items submitted by CEC members has increased steadily since we introduced this service just over a year ago. Thank you! We are delighted to hear from you and to share your news with the global CEC membership at www.iucn.org/cec. This newsletter collects a recently posted news items to provide a quick update. Of particular note is a profile our CEC Regional Chair for Southern Africa, Wazha Tema.

In the May newsletter we will report to you on exciting new ideas about the work of CEC in the coming years. Members of the CEC Steering Committee explored a vision of the Commission’s future during a workshop held 16-20 April in Charmey (Gruyère), Switzerland. Our report will explain the behind-the-scenes process that facilitated a draft of our new mandate – and, most importantly, ask for your feedback.

The much-anticipated CEPA Toolkit will be launched in the June newsletter. It was developed by CEC for the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), for use by professionals responsible for implementing National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans. CBD will be printing and distributing copies in the near future. Thanks to the kit’s lead author, former CEC Chair Frits Hesselink, this wonderful resource is already available online. View the toolkit now at www.cepatoolkit.org.

And a quick reminder: Proposals for participation in the 2008 World Conservation Congress are due by 1 June 2007. If you would like to organize one or more event(s) at the Forum, please visit www.iucn.org/congress to find out more.

With best regards,

Keith Wheeler
Chair, IUCN Commission on Education and Communication

P.S. A survey will be coming soon, and I look forward to hearing from each and every CEC member about future plans for the Commission.
