Aim of the BEPA-OnlineThere is growing recognition amongst policymakers of the prominent role of education and public awareness in the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Simultaneously, a growing pool of experts on biodiversity, education and communication is rapidly materialising this trend by developing new insights, data, skills and networks. Still, the flow of knowledge between the experts and the different programmes is rather occasional and often country of region based. BEPA Online is a vehicle to create, stimulate and sustain a worldwide exchange of information and views on EPA. BEPA-Debate: focussed international discussion high on contentThe International Internet Debate on Biodiversity Education and Public Awareness (BEPA-Debate) will take place in the period 22 January 2002 – 2 April 2002 Experts from all over the world have been invited to take part in the debate. The concept of Biodiversity education will be explored. Furthermore, we will search for effective instruments and will develop input for COP6 in April 2002. What do we offer? This website has been constructed especially for the BEPA-Debate. During the debating period, the website will serve as a platform for the participants. The target is a focussed discussion which is high on content. For that reason two moderators will analyse input, synthesise reactions, give feedback and ask for specific input from the participants. Participants can also influence the debate by giving suggestions on content and process. What do we ask?Participants will be asked by e-mail for input once every three weeks in a 9 week period, starting January 21. We aspire a focussed and 'concentrated' discussion so questions will be provided. Furthermore, the participants will have the opportunity to take notice of each others views and opinions, and react on them. Three debating roundsThe debate consists of three 'rounds'. Each 'round', participants will be asked to express their views on a specific subject by answering a small number of questions and to give opinions on a set of statements. The site will be up dated every three weeks giving an overview of the reactions and an analysis from the moderators. The web site will also give access to relevant other sites and institutions. Furthermore, specific areas of interest will be added to the web site, for instance: literature suggestions, cutting edge projects and links to other sites. The results of the debate can be accessed by 'outsiders'. 'Outsiders will also be given the opportunity to participate 'on the side'. Aim of the BEPA-DebateBEPA-Debate is a structured method to explore views and knowledge and to exchange opinions. Moreover, BEPA-Debate will give input for the sixth Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP6) in April 2002. During COP 6 a work program for article 13 will be adopted. Article 13 requires parties to use education and public awareness as instruments to implement the Convention. Initiator and Supporting OrganisationsThe BEPA-Debate is an initiative of:
