Who we are - Business and Biodiversity Programme
Overview
The calls on IUCN to engage Business date back to the creation of the Union in 1948
The Business and Biodiversity Programme is one of the IUCN global programs aimed at delivering IUCN’s mission by working with companies, business associations, government agencies and civil society organisation to raise business understanding of the conservation imperative, to help them meet their environmental obligations, and to enable them positively contribute to conservation as a part of their corporate social responsibility and aspirations. We do so by integrating biodiversity conservation into corporate policies, strategies, plans and actions. Our ultimate aim is to raise business and biodiversity performance standards and their implementation across the different sectors and scales.
Within IUCN, the Business and Biodiversity Program seeks to enhance the understanding of business imperative and of the challenges and opportunities for biodiversity conservation in the corporate world. We work to strengthen business-related capacities in various parts of the organization, oversee and support the implementation of IUCN private sector strategy, and coordinate the creation of knowledge and learning from private sector engagement. Thus, we offer to business a unique window to access IUCN scientific knowledge, expertise, convening potential and outreach, from a global to local level.
Globally the private sector is growing in size and influence. This is paralleled by calls from across society for business to contain its effects on the environment and to mainstream sustainability principles. The conservation community is increasingly engaging business and IUCN is a leading organization in this effort. The private sector demand for IUCN support is growing.
Within IUCN, the debate about engaging the private sector is maturing. More people see business engagement as a conservation imperative. The Business and Biodiversity Programme (BBP) is acquiring experience, skills and capacity to work more effectively with the private sector and to enhance IUCN’s reputation as a creditable conservation organisation and a partner of choice. In the process, BBP is emerging as a promising IUCN programme.
The Regional and Country Offices of IUCN also increasingly work with business. Most of them have dedicated business and biodiversity focal points. If you would like to contact a particular office please refer to the section “Contact us”.
The Business and Biodiversity Programme counts 5 staff and operates in collaboration with other global programmes as well as regional and country offices.
