Certificate Distribution Ceremony of a 3-Day Training Workshop organized by IUCN Pakistan

A certificate distribution ceremony of a 3-Day Training Workshop was held at Pearl Continental Hotel, Karachi. Mr. Javed Jabbar, IUCN Global Vice President and Regional Councilor, West Asia was the Chief Guest at the ceremony.

IUCN Pakistan under its Balochistan Partnerships for Sustainable Development (BPSD) programme has been organising a series of three-day residential training workshops on PC-1 (amended and revised format) since 2009. The objective of these workshops, therefore, has been to familiarize the districts and provincial governments and their line departments with the revised and amended format of the Planning Commission’s revised format. PC-1 is one of the basic documents to plan and implement any development project at the governmental level.

Mr. Zabardast Khan Bangash, Manager, IUCN Balochistan Programme Office in his remarks said that these trainings are the result of the capacity building needs assessment conducted by IUCN in 2008. It is the 4th training of the series and first training of the year 2012.

He said that IUCN is striving to promote equal opportunities for male and female at the grass-root level to increase the representation of women in all spheres of life. In the year 2011 IUCN provided trainings in various fields to 2,700 persons hailing from government, public sector and civil society organisations. He also talked of equal opportunities for the disabled individuals of the society.

Mr. Bangash warned the participants about the threats of Climate Change that are visible through climatic changes, food security and natural disasters. He stressed on better preparedness to mitigate the effects of Climate Change.

Mr. Javed Jabbar, Chief Guest of the ceremony, appreciated the efforts of IUCN in building the capacity of the government and civil society representatives. While congratulating the participants, he advised them that PC-1 should be prepared on the consumption and conservation basis, while keeping in view the sustainable development.

He also talked of an emerging concept of green economy, which is based on reduction of carbon emission and best usage of resources. He lamented that 34% to 40% of fresh water is lost in Pakistan due to inefficient irrigation system. He said that the average water storage capacity in the world is 40%, in India it is 23% and in Pakistan it is 9%. He said that resource efficiency can bring a big change in the development of the country.

Twenty nine participants from various line departments of provincial and district governments and members of the civil society organisations from Gwadar, Lasbela, Quetta and Karachi attended the workshop.

Mrs. Robeela Bangash and Mr. Waqar Ahmed, the development and project management professionals and experts of the PC-1 formulation were the lead trainers of this workshop.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, successful participants received the certificates by the Chief Guest, Mr. Javed Jabbar.
