This year, the theme of the Reuters -
IUCN Environmental Media Awards is the Best Summit Story. Media
are invited to submit entries related to the World Summit on Sustainable
Development (WSSD), starting on August 26 in Johannesburg, South
Africa.

With 3,000 media representatives accredited
to the Summit and many more reporting on the event word wide, Reuters
Foundation and IUCN are looking forward to outstanding examples
of environmental journalism that seize the moment to enhance public
awareness on the most pressing issues that the Summit is set to
address.
This year, Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan
will officially launch the 2002 Media Awards at the
IUCN Environment Centre in Johannesburg during the WSSD.
This world wide contest in environmental
journalism is presented jointly by Reuters and IUCN to recognise
excellence in professional reporting on environmental and sustainable
development issues; and foster a dialogue between journalists and
experts to encourage informative reporting based on sound scientific
data.
The Reuters-IUCN Environmental Media Awards
were launched in November 1998 on the occasion of IUCN's 50th anniversary.
In 1999, 2000 and 2001 regional Reuters-IUCN Media Awards were presented,
culminating in the selection of a global winner by an international
jury chaired by H. M. Queen Noor of Jordan, Patron of IUCN.
The Reuters - IUCN Media Awards are open to journalists
in print and online news services throughout the world. The deadline
to submit entries is 30 September 2002.
The global winner, selected from amongst the six regional
winners, receives a cash prize of US$5,000. The six regional winners
receive a trophy and travel grant to attend the global ceremony
in December 2002.
