IUCN WAME has initially taken a pragmatic direction, to focus on the cross cutting themes that draw all of the region countries together. These themes are: a Regional Water Resources and Drylands (REWARD) Programme; a Protected Areas Programme; Poverty, Equity & Gender Programme, and a Marine programme.
Through these thematic programmes, IUCN WAME will unite strengths of IUCN components to share knowledge and to develop new models for coonservation and sustainbale development.
IUCN WAME's thematic programmes approach is meant to utilize IUCN's considerable resources in terms of its knowledge network, including a wealth of research, and a wide range of expertise found in a large and diverse constituency, from governmental as well as non-governmental organizations, research institutions, academia, etc.
By establishing thematic programmes based in the region, IUCN WAME aims to strengthen regional ownership for its conservation and sustainable development initiatives among its regional membership, and link individual countries and regions to the broader network of stakeholders and partners dealing with the same issues regionally, and globally.
