What is WPC ?
The IUCN World Parks Congress (WPC) is held every
decade, providing a major global forum to determine agendas
for protected areas. Each World Parks Congress offers a novel
occasion for a situational analysis of protected areas - progress
and hurdles -, as well as providing an opportunity for chalking
plans for protected areas over the next decade and beyond.
The Vth World Parks Congress: 2003
This year, the Vth IUCN World Parks Congress will be held in
Durban, South Africa, from 8 to 17 September 2003.
The Congress is a major international event for IUCN.
The patrons for the upcoming WPC are the former South African
President and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Mr. Nelson Mandela
and Her Majesty Queen Noor. The Vth IUCN World Parks Congress
is organised by IUCN - The World Conservation Union, its World
Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), South African National
Parks and the Government of South Africa.
The theme of the Vth World Parks Congress is "Benefits
Beyond Boundaries". This theme reflects IUCN’s vision
to constantly build new partnerships and reinforce the value
of protected areas as sustainers of life on earth.
