IUCN Members' Involvement

As a member driven organization, IUCN encourages full participation of its members, in the planning of its programmes across the globe. The IUCN membership includes States, government agencies, political/economic integration organizations, and national and international non-governmental organizations.

IUCN invites members to:

  • participate in national and regional committees and attend the World Conservation Congress;
  • support the formulation of policy;
  • help develop and implement the IUCN Programme;
  • elect the IUCN Council;
  • interact with other members through National and Regional Committees, and the WCC;
  • share knowledge, experience and expertise with other members, IUCN staff, Regional Councillors and Commissions

Individuals can become members of the six IUCN Commissions, namely: ecosystems management; environmental education and communication; environmental law; environment, economics and social policy; protected areas, and species survival.


IUCN Pakistan Membership

The membership of IUCN in Pakistan has grown from a mere eight in 1990 to 24 state, government and non-government organizations today. This membership includes the Government of Pakistan as a state member, six government organizations and 18 NGO members. Member portfolios include but are not limited to support and implementation for environmental conservation, sustainable development, research, policy development, advocacy, rural development, support to and development of academic institutes, education, training and capacity development.

Furthermore, more than 80 volunteers from Pakistan work on the network of IUCN's (scientific) Commissions. IUCN Pakistan and its membership collaborate through participation in programme planning, implementation of joint projects, advocacy around key issues, and support for fund raising. Since the formation of the Pakistan National Committee in 1996, the relationship with the membership has further evolved and strengthened. IUCN Secretariat Pakistan

IUCN Pakistan has five provincial/ regional programme offices in cities from the north to the south, (Islamabad, Gilgit, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta) multiple field offices and a large portfolio of projects.
