The World Conservation Union is the world's largest and most important conservation network. Its three main pillars are its members, Commissions and the Secretariat. The Union brings together 82 States, 111 government agencies, more than 800 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and some 10,000 scientists and experts from 181 countries in a unique worldwide partnership.
The Union's mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.
The World Conservation Union is a multicultural, multilingual organization with 1000 staff located in 62 countries. Its headquarters are in Gland, Switzerland.
At a meeting on 6 July 1996 at Quetta, the members of IUCN Pakistan agreed to form the Pakistan National Committee (PNC) of IUCN. The PNC is a self-governing independent body within the framework of the objectives provided by the Statutes, Rules and Regulations of the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

The PNC members participated in the 4th IUCN Asia Regional Conservation Forum (RCF) held
at Kathmandu, Nepal on September 10-13, 2007. The theme of the forum was "Synergies for a Sustainable Asia". During the RCF, the Pakistani delegation also met with Ms. Julia Marton-Lefèvre Director General IUCN and Ms. Aban Marker Kabraji and exchanged the views on the various matters including issues and opportunities for enhanced cooperation to promote sustainable development and the role of IUCN Asia and Pakistan in regional and global environmental processes. .

Representatives of civil society member organizations; of the Pakistan National Committee of IUCN – The World Conservation Union have affirmed their complete solidarity with “Shehri”, a fellow member; organization of IUCN with reference to its principled stand in the public interest on the attempt to convert the amenity plot known as Kidney Hill Park in Karachi into a housing and commercial scheme.
At a recent meeting of the PNC held in Lahore on 22nd March, 2007, a representative of “Shehri” briefed members on the historical background to the Kidney Hill case and provided details about the present situation.

Meeting of Pakistan National Committee (PNC) of IUCN members held at Lahore on March 22, 2007. Mr. Javed Jabbar, Chairperson PNC chaired the meeting. Mr. Rizwan Mahmood of WWF made presentation on New Murree Project, while Mr. Shahid Khan made presentation on Indus Earth, a member of IUCN.
