IUCN joined hands with partners in celebrating the Golden Jubilee of the first ascent of K2 – Pakistan's highest and the world's second highest mountain. It was on 31 July 1954 when an Italian mountaineering team set foot on the then unconquered summit of K2. The Prime Minister of Pakistan, a large number of dignitaries, mountaineers, and representatives of the donor and development sectors attended the international conference held in Islamabad to commemorate the occasion. |
| The Prime Minister visited the IUCN exhibit, where he was presented with copies of the special publication on K2 jointly produced by IUCN and partners. The IUCN Pakistan Country Representative introduced a study on 'Ecotourism in Relation to Environment and Poverty Alleviation', which contains a detailed analysis on tourism for poverty alleviation in the most economically marginalized mountain communities of Pakistan. |
