Reporting for environment

By Altaf Hussain

Chitral, May 17-19: A three day training workshop for press clubs of Chitral and Swat on Reporting for Environment was organized by MACP-NWFP. The training was attended by ten senior journalists from leading news papers of Swat and Chitral.

On the first day, environment related issues of Swat and Chitral were identified, prioritized and selected for further investigation and reporting by the Working Groups. In addition, exercises were conducted to differentiate between news and investigative news stories.

On the second day, the training participants visited one of the MACP valleys Golain in Chitral to practice developing investigative stories. For this purpose two topics were given to the working groups Poverty and Natural Resource Management and Governance and Natural Resource Management. The visiting journalists enjoyed local hospitality offered by the Valley Conservation Committee (VCC) Golain and received a briefing on MACP activities from the President Valley Conservation Committee. They also visited some of the infrastructure projects assisted by the MACP and took lunch in Tourist Hut/Community Hall constructed by the VCC with financial support from MACP and its support project.

On the third day, participants developed and refined news stories based on their experiences of the visit to Golain. At the end, certificates were distributed among the participating Journalists. One of the outcomes of the workshop was the formation of Chitral Forum of Environmental Journalists (CFEJ).
