By Shah Faisal

Quetta, July 11: It was almost same time of the year and venue when nine years back it was decided by the IUCN members to form the PNC of IUCN on July 6, 1996 in Quetta. With various objectives, the committee mainly aimed at improving coordination, networking and participation by the members. It has 24 members including Government of Pakistan, six govt. organizations and NGO’s. These members met in Quetta under the chairmanship of Mr. Javed Jabbar, and attended by representatives of Wildlife department, Baanhn Beli, WWF, SPO, Shirkat Gah, Sungi, NIO and BASDO, among others.

New Murree Project was also discussed in the meeting and the members declared the response by the New Murree Development Authority to queries

made by the PNC as unsatisfactory and suggested getting further details from the relevant authorities. It was also decided to share information with the CDA who has its own reservations about the project. Javed Jabbar, President of PNC, informed the participants about his interaction with the corporate organizations including banks, pharmaceutical industry and textile industry.

Abdul Latif Rao, Country representative of IUCNP, suggested holding a workshop on Corporate Social Responsibility for the corporate sector. The audience seconded to it. It was also decided that a roundtable will be held at Peshawar on Women and Forestry.

Another important part of discussion was on holding a National Conference on environment which would be attended by national and international experts. Javed Jabbar advised the members to start preparing for the event as it would require at least a year to hold an event of this magnitude and importance.

Members appreciated the PNC brochure which was circulated during the meeting and took keen interest in the two presentations made by Mahmood Akhtar Cheema, Head Constituency of IUCNP, on Introduction of IUCN and its portfolio in Pakistan and by Hasan Akhtar Rizvi, Head IUCNP’s ECK Group, on the latest website of PNC. It was decided that members will provide content for the website. This website has been developed by the Knowledge Management Unit of IUCNP.

Javed Jabbar thanked the participants and hoped this forum would increase in size as well as in efficacy to meet its objectives.
