Workshop on poultry related issues

Abbottabad, July 6: District Government Abbottabad in collaboration with IUCNP Abbottabad Office organized a workshop to discuss poultry related environmental issues in the district. DCO Abbottabad chaired the workshop and the participants included relevant District Government Officials, representatives of Poultry Farmers Association, CSOs and EPA NWFP.

Speaking on the occasion Gul Rehman, DCO Abbottabad, appreciated the support of IUCN and EPA NWFP in organizing the workshop and assured that District Government will involve all stakeholders in decision making process in this regard.

He said that the District Government would try its best to solve all poultry related issues with full involvement of the stakeholders.

Javed Khan, President Poultry Association Abbottabad, presented poultry related issues from poultry farmer's perspective and suggested to comprise a committee of relevant Govt. Officials, EPA and poultry Association for monitoring the poultry farms and for penalizing those found violating the rules.

Mussadaq Shah, ACO Abbottabad presented the background of the workshop and informed that in the first meeting of DEPC Abbottabad, held on April 6, 2005, various environmental issues of District Abbottabad were discussed. During the discussions, environmental impact of poultry farms emerged as one of the major issues of district. It was, therefore, decided to hold a session on poultry related issues where the impact of poultry farms on the environment and possible remedial measures will be discussed.

Dr. Amjad Ali Khan, Deputy Director NWFP Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), presented the background of various legislations related to poultry forms. He explained that EPA NWFP in collaboration with IUCNP Sarhad Office has prepared environmental guidelines for 22 sectors including poultry farms. The Federal EPA has approved these guidelines and from now on all new poultry farms will be granted NoC by EPA, if they comply with these guidelines.

Hameed Hassan from IUCNP Peshawar office explained various provisions of land use zoning under the LGO 2001 and the role of TMAs in this regard. He also informed that IUCNP is organizing a training sessions on environmental guidelines for all 22 sectors including poultry sector for the relevant stakeholders in Abbottabad.


After an in-depth discussion on the presentations the participants unanimously agreed on the following recommendations:

Poultry Association will provide a poultry farm to EPA, where they will apply all guidelines and environment friendly practices, making it a demonstration farm, for replication by other poultry farmers.

EPA will also look into the possibility of supporting model poultry farms through a small project, for which EPA will submit a PC-I to NWFP Government.

All new poultry farms will be required to plant trees in the area around the building of their poultry farm.
