Planned activities on World Environment Day

The celebration of the World Environment Day (WED) by IUCNP this year has been quite unprecedented in terms of the number and diversity of activities being carried out, most of them with key partners

From the Country Office we are going to send out a media release highlighting the problems of urban environment in line with the WED theme this year taking the opportunity to introduce our upcoming Clean Air Initiative. We are also trying to organize an event to launch it with appropriate partners within this month.

Balochistan Programme Office:

1. IUCN in collaboration with the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation Quetta is organizing speech contest among the students of twenty colleges. The title of this activity would be the "PBC-IUCN All Quetta Inter Colleges Environmental Speech Contest"

2. A special news supplement is being brought out by the local newspapers as a result of successful advocacy by IUCN with articles contributed by its staff.

3. Urban Basic Services Cell, Quetta is organizing walk with the collaboration of IUCN BPO, in which individuals will be invited from all walks of life.

4. In support of the District Government Quetta, IUCN has provided environmental messages on WED theme and slogans for special banners being erected in different parts off Quetta. In addition to these, listed below are few events that will be organized by different civil society actors in close assistance and coordination of BPO.

Seminar on Islamic perspective on Environment and Conservation will be organized by the Ulema of Balochistan. Representative from districts will also participate in this seminar. Ulema from every school of though will make their deliberation.

Ziarat Juniper Environmental Council (ZJEC), our partner civil society network will be holding a seminar in Ziarat. The topic of the seminar will be ‘Conservation of Juniper forest in Ziarat and Environment’ People from all walks of life will participate in this event. Efforts are there to invite Governor Balochistan on the said occasion.

Balochistan Social Development Programme (BSDP) will be organizing a walk on the same day. Declamation contest among the schools of Quetta was organized by BEPA in collaboration of BPO on May 26, 2005. Theme of the contest was Green Cities, plan for the planet. One Girl and One Boy was nominated for all Pakistan declamation contest that will be held on June 05, 2005, in Islamabad.

Society for Human Awareness Development and Empowerment will celebrate the day in Naseerabad region.

June 05, morning, a rally will be organized. People from all walks of life are invited to participate in the event. Rally will convert latter in a seminar on "World environment day"

Beside this a Poster Competition has been announced for the student of school/colleges and the winner will be awarded with prize on World environment Day seminar. Prize on article about World Environment Day have also been announced for journalist of naseerabad region. All cable operator in Naseerabad region will display slogans, related to WED on all channels. Balochistan Coordinating Council (BCC) our partner civil society network will organize event (walks, seminar) in ten districts of Balochistan Islamabad Programme Office. On this occasion, IUCN is collaborating with UN System (UNIC), Capital Development Authority (CDA), and WWF Pakistan to organize joint event/celebrations of the day on Tuesday, the 7th June, 2005 during 1000-1200 hrs. The venue is Islamabad Convention Centre.

To highlight the significance of the day and the theme of this year, we have invited Ministers for Environment, Chairman CDA and key players in urban planning of our green capital Islamabad, along with environmentalists, academicians, media and relevant civil society organizations.

We have also planned to setup exhibition stalls separately by civil society organizations and Universities/Colleges/ Schools depicting their initiatives/research/projects on environmental issues. Number of private and government schools are displaying their art work related to environment.

Sarhad Office: The Sarhad Office is supporting Sarhad Conservation Network, a civil society organization to commemorate World Environment Day on June 4, 2005 at Khyber Medical College. The main features of the seminar are presentations by experts and panel discussion on Urban Environmental Issues and its public health implications, with a key note address by Dr. Parvez Hassan on Environmental Protection "recent challenges of implementation in Pakistan".

Chitral Office: Chitral Office has planned to celebrate the World Environment Day on June 5, 21005 in collaboration with Muslim Model School Chitral. In this connection a Speech and Poster Competition has been planned for the event. Theme of the activity will be "Environmental issues of Chitral town and their impact on Human Life".

Abbottabad Office: Abbottabad Office has planned to celebrate the World Environment Day in collaboration with District Government Abbottabad on June 04, 2005 at Jalal Baba Auditorium.

Following three competitions will be held among school children on the day.

Urdu Speech Competition (15 student from 15 institutions)

English Speech competition (15 student from 15 institutions)

Poster Competition(50 students from 19 institutions)

Topic for all competitions will be Green Towns-Secure Future. A Stage drama is also planned for this event. District Nazim will be the chief guest and will distribute certificates and souvenir among students.

D. I. Khan Office: D.I. Khan office is organizing a seminar in partnership with SERVE & ISD. Theme is Green Cities. Specific topics include (Environment and Health, Environment and Islam, Environment and Urbanization, Urban Forestry, Environment and Water & Sanitation, Environment and Development). A drawing competition will be conducted during the seminar and theme will be the Environment. DCO will be the Chief Guest and various civil societies, journalists, lawyers, doctors, CCBs, public representatives, academia, and active individuals will participate in the seminar.
