Programme Coordination Committee meets

By Lincoln Daniel

Karachi, May 25-26: The Programme Coordination Unit organized the first Programme Coordination Committee meeting of 2005 in Karachi on May 25 & 26. The meeting was attended by around 37 staff that included the CR, Heads and one staff each from all the Offices, coordinators/managers of all the district strategies, the Mountain Areas Conservancy Project(MACP), the Pakistan Ecosystems and Livelihoods Group, the Education, Communication and Knowledge Management Unit, and the Corporate Services.

This PCC had very focused agenda. The objectives were:

Common understanding on the process being followed to develop district visions in Abbottabad, Chitral, D. I. Khan, Gwadar, Qila Saifullah and Badin

Common understanding of the process being followed to develop demonstration projects and how the poverty and livelihoods angle needs to be incorporated

The first morning showcased work on the District Visions of Gwadar, Qila Saifullah, Chitral, Abbottabad, D. I. Khan and Badin. Participants were asked to note down lessons learned as well as any questions that remained to be answered. These would go towards the guidelines being developed on the processes that could be followed to develop district visions.

In the afternoon, discussions on the demonstration projects being undertaken in the NWFP, Sindh, Balochistan and MACP took place. All were meant to highlight how improved use of natural resources can benefit people.

The second day consisted of information sharing sessions during which the lessons learned from the monitoring missions of PEP and Balochistan, the PSNP Monitoring Plan, an IUCN mountains programme and the Decision Support System-HKKS project (by P. B Chetri, Coordinator, Regional Mountains Programme) and a paper on advocacy were shared.

The meeting was chaired by Dhunmai Cowasjee, Head Programme Coordination Unit, IUCN Pakistan.
