of environmentalists, wildlife specialists,

over to officials from the Wildlife Conservation

Malik Amin Aslam was the chief guest and

LEO
- The Snow Leopard: Leo,
the Snow Leopard, was rescued by a shepherd
of Naltar Valley, in Northern Areas of Pakistan.
The Gilgit office of the World Wide Fund
for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P) brought the cub
to
their office and later it was moved to the
Khunjerab National Park on decision of The
Northern Areas Forest and Wildlife Department
and the Federal Government. With onset of
summer and the resulting increase in temperature,
the cub was taken back to Naltar Valley and
has since remained there. Consequently, the
US Embassy in Islamabad was informed of the
cub's situation and submitted a proposal
to the Government of Pakistan suggesting
that
the snow leopard be loaned for captive breeding
to an international facility as part of a
long-term conservation and rehabilitation
programme.
Noting the existence of state-of-the-art
snow leopard facilities in the US, namely
the world
renowned facility at the Bronx Zoo, IUCN
Pakistan backed this proposal and worked
tirelessly
to persuade all parties. Once identified
as a potential home for the cub, the Wildlife
Conservation Society/Bronx Zoo enthusiastically
took on the venture. |

World
Environment Day, June 5, 2006:
Don't
Desert Drylands! Pakistan especially vulnerable
to desertification Pakistan, with most of
its land area classified as arid or semi arid
is extremely vulnerable to
the growing threat of desertification through drought
and soil degradation. It has one of the lowest
percentages of area under forest and with little
slowing down of the trend of deforestation - one
of the major causes of desertification - the situation
demands extraordinary measures to be undertaken
on an emergency basis. The World Environment Day
2006, with its slogan, "Don't desert drylands," poignantly
brings home the urgency of this message. |

Islam,
environmental education
and
conservation in the MACP. Conservancies of
Northern Pakistan. Religious
leaders in Islam are highly respected personalities,
and they are approached by communities
on matters dealing with all aspects of
daily life, as laid out in the teachings
of Islam, giving them leadership and voice
in the activities that are undertaken both
by individuals and groups. As a result
of both their stature in the community
and the Islamic teachings, religious leaders
can play a vital role in explaining the
linkages between all aspects of the natural
world, and that when the links or relationships
are severed-certain species decrease or
disappear because of poaching or environmental
systems are degraded through pollution-it
affects all life on earth. |
