Chitral Conservation Strategy Launched

Chitral is the northern most, mountainous district of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), which has the distinction of being the first district in Pakistan to have its own conservation strategy. Like for strategies at the national and provincial levels, IUCNP facilitated in formulating this district conservation strategy. The District Government of Chitral has formally approved it as its 'integrated development vision'.

Published by the IUCN, Sarhad Proramme, it comes in two parts. The first part provides the necessary background information representing the state of environment and development for Chitral. The second part consists of the strategy itself. The work for the development of the strategy as well as its publication has been supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

A ceremony was held at Chitral on 27th January, 2005 to launch the 'Chitral Conservation Strategy'. Moulana Abdul Akbar, local Member of National Assembly was the Chief guest on the occasion while Muhammad Salim Khan, Zilla Naib Nazim presided over the function.

The MNA appreciated the efforts of the CCS support unit in formulating the conservation strategy for chitral and stressed the need for participation of public representatives in all developmental strategies/programmes. Those who spoke on the occasion included DCO Muhammad Adil, Tehsil Nazim Haji Amir Khan, RPM AKRSP Meraj Khan, EDO (Fin&Plg) Qazi Saeed ul Hassan and Nazim Union Council Sardar Hussain. Speakers appreciated the role of SDC for providing financial assitance, IUCN, Provincial Departments and former district administration of chitral for facilitating the strategy which covers issues as big as construction of the Lowari tunnel down small businesses and environmental conservation. Manager CCS Support Unit Aziz Ali paid a vote of thanks for the participants who attended the function despite inclement weather.
