In the Eastern Africa Region, there are still very impressive biodiversity resources that encompass very diverse ecological systems ranging from afromontane forests in the Albertine Rift region over the semi-arid and arid areas of the Horn of Africa to the marine and coastal habitats along the Indian Ocean.
However biodiversity information and data are not always available and when in existence, is not easily available to potential users. An important reason to this situation is that up to now nothing or not sufficiently has been done to set up functional “Biodiversity Information Centers” where relatively reliable information on biodiversity features and data could firstly be gathered and secondly put at the disposal of the general public. These Centers could come in form of coordinating institutions related to others that would own such data or simply be offices where the information would be made reachable by anybody. In the struggle
to fight against poverty and foster socio-economic development, the establishment of an efficient system of biodiversity information centers could play an important role in exploiting and enhancing scientific knowledge which is to be considered as an important and efficient tool to better conserve biodiversity at regional and national levels.
