CCIUCN (IUCN Canadian Committee for members) Annual General
Meeting, Ottawa, December 4, 2006.
The Canadian Committee for IUCN (CCIUCN) is an independent
body comprised of Canadian members of IUCN - government agencies,
non-governmental organisations - along with some Canadian
members of IUCN Commissions, and individual members who support
the aims and objectives of the IUCN and volunteer their time
to advance those aims and objectives.
IThe Canadian Committee for IUCN, or CCIUCN, was established
in 1992 and accorded status by IUCN Council as an official
national committee in 2001. It supports IUCN in its global
efforts by working with its member organisations within Canada,
and contributing to the work of IUCN globally. Among the accomplishments
of the CCIUCN was the successful invitation of the IUCN to
hold its World Conservation Congress in Montréal in
1996. This helped to bring world attention to the role of
Canada in conservation.
2010
Biodiversity Challenge: In 2005, CCIUCN embarked on an
initiative to challenge and support Canadian society in its
efforts to achieve the global target of significantly reducing
the rate of biodiversity loss by the year 2010, inspired by
Europe's Countdown 2010. Secretariat support is provided
by the Canadian Museum of Nature.
