Food Security through Additional Income Generation

The IUCN Environmental Law Centre participated at the stakeholders consultation on “Food Security through Additional Income Generation: From Payment of Environmental Services to Remuneration of Positive Externalities (RPE) in the Agriculture and Food Sector,” convened by the FAO Natural Resource Management and Environment Department at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. Thomas Greiber, Senior Legal Officer at the Centre, was invited to give a presentation on legal frameworks for payment for ecosystem services (PES) schemes, the topic of two recent publications by the Environmental Law Centre: “Payments for Ecosystem Services: Legal and Institutional Frameworks”, and “Legal Frameworks for REDD: Design and Implementation at the National Level”.

Assessing Biodiversity in Europe - the 2010 report

Europe is still far from meeting its 2010 target and we risk missing future targets unless we change the way we are managing our environment. The European Environment Agency’s new biodiversity report based on SEBI 2010 indicators assesses the state of biodiversity in Europe and makes recommendations for improving policy effectiveness. IUCN's European Union Representative Office contributed to the writing of this report and provided coordinating support.

Success story of the day: NABU Münster Naturschutzstation and Stadtverband

Story featured in the Made in Countdown 2010 publication: Since 1996, Münster’s volunteers of NABU – one of the oldest and largest environment associations in Germany, encompassing more than 450,000 members and sponsors – have helped trim the branches of fruit trees, plant 3,800 trees, and harvest the orchards’ products in the region. Fair prices are an incentive for farmers to conserve their orchards, and ensuring consumption of the orchards’ fruit contributes both to the protection of existing orchards and the plantation of new ones. …

Success story of the day: Limburg Province

Story featured in the Made in Countdown 2010 publication: The Province of Limburg and three Regionale Landschappen (Regional Landscapes) – the NGOs whose mission is to improve the quality of the landscapes, including the nature in the region of Limburg – launched a project in 2008, encouraging every municipality in the Province to adopt an animal or a plant. The Province and the NGOs prepared an action plan for each of the adopted species explaining what should be done to protect them and what measures were needed. …
