IUCN and the Council of Europe Strengthen Cooperation

The Council of Europe will today sign  a Memorandum of Co-operation (MoC) with IUCN. The MoC complements and updates a co-operation agreement between both organisations dating from 1962, and it will be signed during the European Conference “Post-2010 Biodiversity Vision and Target – The role of protected areas and ecological networks in Europe”, hosted by the Spanish Presidency of the EU and held in Madrid (Spain) on 26-27 January 2010 …

Communication meeting for ENPI FLEG Program in Georgia

On frosty and sunny days of January 2010, IUCN South Caucasus office in Tbilisi hosted first Communication Meeting of the ENPI FLEG Program. ENPI FLEG means “Forest Law Enforcement and Governance in the European Neighborhood Policy East Countries and Russia” program, being implemented in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine. The program is funded by European Commission. The program’s implementing partners are the World Bank, IUCN and WWF. …

Huasco River, Chile

Watering the Atacama Desert: Keeping the Rio Huasco Flowing

The Huasco River in the Atacama Region of Chile is no typical river. Fed by glaciers straddling the Chile and Argentina border high up in the Andes, the river is formed by the confluence of the Del Carmen and Del Transito tributaries. Halfway along the river from source to sea the Santa Juana Reservoir stores the water for irrigation needs – mainly for grapes grown for export and olives for oil. The river continues to flow through Vallenar, the capital of the Huasco province, eventually entering the Pacific Ocean at the coastal town of Huasco. …

L’UICN-RDC à travers le Programme Régional d’Afrique Centrale pour l’Environnement (CARPE) à procédé le mercredi  13 janvier à la présentation des différents ouvrages et documents produits en 2009. Etaient présents à cette cérémonie les délègués de la Primature, des ministères (Environnement, Mines, Agricultures, Affaires Foncières, Hydrocarbures), la Société civile locale ainsi que les ONGs Internationales.  Au total trois ouvrages et un film documentaire ont été produits. …

Meeting on the draft Covenant on Environment and Development in Bonn, January 14-15

Hosted by the IUCN Environmental Law Centre (ELC), eighteen international law experts from all over the world - most of them Members of the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law (CEL) - gathered in Bonn to proceed to an update of the draft Covenant on Environment and Development. The project is spearheaded by CEL, and implemented with the support of the International Council for Environmental Law (ICEL), an international NGO member of IUCN. The meeting followed more than one year of preparation, with invited experts providing proposals for amendments to be considered at the meeting. …
