Chairs of National Committee of IUCN Members from Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESARO) convened in Pretoria, South Africa this week to discuss the region’s preparations for the IUCN World Conservation Congress to be held in Jeju, South Korea in September this year. The meeting brought together Chairs from Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Speaking at the meeting, the IUCN Regional Director for ESARO, Ali Kaka, emphasised the importance of Members’ participation before and during the Congress. “The IUCN Congress is the moment for Members to exercise their rights and influence the governance of IUCN,” he said. “It is therefore important that the region goes to Jeju very prepared and with one voice to meaningfully advance a conservation agenda that speaks to the realities of the Africa region.”

Participants discussed conservation and development issues affecting the region and agreed on areas around which members can draft motions to be tabled at the Congress. The meeting reviewed all the planned activities for the World Conservation Forum, a segment of the IUCN Congress. They also examined the profiles of candidates for the IUCN Council and agreed to discuss with ESARO Members on which candidates to support.

In addition to discussing Congress matters, the National Committee Chairs also discussed ways of improving the functioning of their committees and strengthening the Regional Committee.

Dear Hastings,
Good initiative and I would like to thank you. I wonder whether the meeting talked about the candidates for election particularly from Africa?.
Can you let me know more about that.
