IUCN Europe and WCPA have agreed to strenghten cooperation in the region by appointing a focal point in the Secretariat.
The European Regional Conservation Forum took place in Bonn, Germany from 6 to 9 September. The first day of the Forum was dedicated to discussions on the role of IUCN Commissions and National Committees in Europe in view of the new IUCN Global Programme.
One of the key recommendations which emerged from the meetings was to appoint selected staff of the IUCN Secretariat as focal points for each of the six IUCN Commissions.
IUCN Regional Director for Europe, Dr Hans Friederich and the European Chair of the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), Dr Stig Johansson appointed the Director of the IUCN Programme Office for South-Eastern Europe, Boris Erg, as focal point for WCPA in Europe.
Dr Friederich stressed that “It is important to have better connection between the experts of the WCPA and the Secretariat’s activities in Europe following the spirit of the “One Programme” approach. Dr Johansson noted that, “the WCPA focal point will strengthen the role of the Commission and facilitate the effective use of the WCPA network of experts in promoting protected areas as an effective mean of conservation of biodiversity in pan-Europe” .
The activity of the IUCN’s office in Belgrade directed by Boris Erg focuses on cross-border protected areas initiatives and projects. Boris is therefore the best placed to reinforce the link between the Commission and the Secretariat.
