"We do exactly what we say’ - Interview with Richard Aishton

05 May 2011 | News story

Richard Aishton, ENPI FLEG Program Coordinator at IUCN Europe, was recently interviewed by the ENPI Info centre, as part of their series on "The People Behind the Projects". Richard explained that the Program is trying to promote sustainable forest management and good consistent transparent governance of forest resources in 6 eastern European Neighbourhood Countries and Russia. "Its a long road and we know we will not achieve it in our lifetimes but it’s important to start out and move towards that goal."

The forest is not just about wood-cutting. It harbours animals, biodiversity, water; it prevents erosion. The EU-funded Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (ENA–FLEG) project is trying to make people realize and encourage them to develop policy that sustains this precious resource.

Richard explained that the Program is trying to promote sustainable forest management and good consistent transparent governance of forest resources. For that, we need to establish relationships with the central, regional and local authorities. We are not telling them what to do, but rather we help them to understand the value of their countries’ natural resources.
