CEC National Activator Wins Nigerian Youth Leadership Award
26 November 2010 | News story
Esther Agbarakwe, CEC National Activator for Nigeria, is a winner in LEAP Africa’s 7th Annual Nigerian Youth Leadership Awards.
Esther Agbarakwe was recognized at the LEAP Africa’s 7th Annual Nigerian Youth Leadership Awards for her role in the Nigerian Youth Climate Coalition. She was one of four to receive the award this year, out of more than 140 nominees. The award, presented 11 November 2010 at the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos, recognizes outstanding young Nigerians who have initiated social change projects in their local communities.
The five winners will each receive 100,000 Naira (675 US dollars) to support their work in local communities. Ms. Mosunmola Layode, Executive Director of LEAP Africa, says that that the organization “will continue to reward excellence wherever it is found.” She notes that awardees receive the cash prize after they have submitted their proposals on the projects they want to carry out. The LEAP Africa award was launched in 2004, and is supported with funding from the Ford Foundation.
Esther’s interest in ‘environmental sustainability’ inspired her to establish the Nigerian Youth Climate Coalition (NYCC) with friends, in order to bring together many young Nigerians who are providing solutions to the climate change crisis. The organization works in both local and international circles, organizing programmes, influencing government and implementing concrete solutions.
Working in schools and communities across Nigeria, NYCC has trained some 1,500 youth through peer group training and online social networks on climate change issues. Also, more than 40 youth between the ages of 18 and 25 have participated in training on the process of recycling used papers. Ten of these young people later received equipment to recycle paper for the production of paper products, including greeting cards and picture frames.
In May 2010, Esther was appointed National Activator in Nigeria for the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication (CEC).
