Saving western gray whales: Ask your questions before 6 December!
Business has joined forces with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to protect the critically endangered western gray whale population. You are invited to send us your questions on this unique collaboration to save the whales.
Since 2004, Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. (Sakhalin Energy), an oil and gas consortium consisting of Gazprom, Shell, Mitsui and Mitsubishi, has joined forces with IUCN to minimize potential risks from the company’s operations to the western gray whale population in the vicinity of Sakhalin Island, Russia. In 2006, at the request of Sakhalin Energy, IUCN convened a long-term scientific panel (the Western Gray Whale Advisory Panel – WGWAP) to advise the company on a regular basis and strengthen its monitoring and mitigation efforts.
The WGWAP provides a mechanism for the exchange of information and opinion among various stakeholders and for scientifically rigorous independent assessment. Moreover, it can serve as a model of how business, scientists and the conservation community can work constructively and non-confrontationally to address environmental issues.
On 4-6 December 2010, the WGWAP will hold its 9th meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. Between now and the end of this meeting, IUCN would like to invite all interested organizations and individuals to participate in an online question and answer session. You are invited to send all your questions on the WGWAP to firstname.lastname@example.org before 6 December 2010. Questions will be compiled and answered by our experts, and posted on the IUCN website before the end of December 2010.
We look forward to hearing from you!
