On 1st December 2010 the seminar “Sea the Future – The importance of marine biodiversity for local livelihoods in West-Africa” will take place at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation (EL&I, former LNV) the Hague, the Netherlands. The seminar is organized by the Working Group Ecology and Development and is supported by the IUCN National Committee of the Netherlands, World Wildlife Fund the Netherlands and the Ministry of EL&I.
This seminar will discuss how the integration of conservation and sustainable management of marine ecosystems in Dutch international policies can improve the situation for local communities in West-African coastal areas. Practical examples of the successes and challenges in sustainable management of marine ecosystems will be presented by experts from the field such as scientists, policymakers, businesses and NGOs. Ecological, economical and social aspects of relevant Dutch international policies will be discussed. Parallel workshops will focus on the elaboration of necessary actions and steps towards sustainable marine ecosystem management and benefits in terms of improved local livelihoods.
