New OECD publication says smart use of natural resources can alleviate poverty

17 February 2009 | News story

The OECD has just released Natural Resources and Pro-Poor Growth: The Economics and Politics. This publication is intended to help decision-makers in developing countries reduce poverty.

The publication, to which IUCN provided intensive technical inputs, can be used as a guide by governments to

• Take stock of the contribution that natural resources can make to pro-poor growth;
• Understand the importance of policies that nurture sustainable management of these resources;
• Address the governance challenges associated with natural resources management.

The report is divided into two parts: The first part provides an overview of the economics and politics of natural resources. It describes the unique features of natural resources and resulting management challenges, the role of sustainable natural resource management in supporting pro poor growth, and the politics and governance of natural resources. The second one examines these issues with respect to seven specific natural resource sectors: fisheries, forests, wildlife and ecotourism, soil productivity, water security, minerals and renewable energy.

During IUCN’s World Conservation Congress in Barcelona in October 2008, OECD hosted an event on Overcoming the Natural Resource Curse – Achieving Pro-poor Growth and launched this publication.

The Report is available via the OECD Online Bookshop. You can purchase the paperback and download the PDF e-book, or save 20% by just buying the PDF file.

IUCN is an observer to the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) Network on Environment and Development Co-operation (ENVIRONET) and takes part in meetings of the ENVIRONET. ENVIRONET meets every 8 months and membership includes donor agencies from most of IUCN’s current and prospective framework partners.
