In response to the urgent need to address the issue of biodiversity loss, nearly 200 governments adopted the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 at the Convention on Biological diversity meeting in Nagoya, Japan, in October 2010.
The vision of this strategic plan is a world of “Living in harmony with nature” where “By 2050, biodiversity is valued, conserved, restored and wisely used, maintaining ecosystem services, sustaining a healthy planet and delivering benefits essential for all people.”
The mission of the Strategic Plan is to “take effective and urgent action to halt the loss of biodiversity in order to ensure that by 2020 ecosystems are resilient and continue to provide essential services, thereby securing the planet’s variety of life, and contributing to human well-being, and poverty eradication. In Nagoya, the decade 2011-2020 was also declared the Decade of Biodiversity.
The strategic plan includes a shared vision, a mission, and 20 targets organized under five strategic goals, to inspire broad-based action by all Parties and stakeholders.
