Marine protected areas: the way forward

The French Marine Protected Areas Agency and the IUCN French Committee will organize the second national dialogue on marine protected areas from 15 to 17 November 2010 in La Rochelle, France.

The dialogue aims to:

  • Assess the level of knowledge of the marine natural heritage in the ecoregions where France if present;
  • Take stock of current policies (international, European and national);
  • Exchange information on the key issues related to marine protected areas;
  • Contribute to the revision of the national strategy for marine protected areas.

The event is addressed to policy makers and representatives of public bodies, protected area managers, fishing and tourism professional associations, nature protection organizations, science bodies, and all people and organizations interested in marine biodiversity conservation. Representatives of the overseas territories are particularly invited to the dialogues; overseas play a fundamental role in the strategy for marine protected areas development.

This image shows the courtship behavior of Indian Bull frogs (Holobatrachus tigerinus). During the monsoon, the breeding males become bright yellow in color, while females remain dull. The prominent blue vocal sacs of male produce strong nasal mating call.
