ELC Legal Officer, Jane Bulmer, presented her study paper at a well attended side event at the 7th Meeting of the ABS Working Group. The study looks at the relationship between the international regime on ABS, being developed under the CBD, and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources and the FAO Commission on genetic resources for food and agriculture.

It highlights some key legal and policy issues and provides a number of possible options on how the regimes could co-exist. The study was commissioned by the CBD Secretariat, in accordance with COP Decision IX/12, and was part of a larger study looking at the relationship of the regime with a number of international instruments including UNCLOS, WIPO, UPOV and the Antarctic Treaty.
