In December, Jane Bulmer attended a workshop on traditional knowledge and the International ABS regime. The workshop was hosted by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management in Vienna and brought together 25 participants, acting in their personal capacity to encourage an open exchange of views.
The workshop focussed on 3 fictional ABS scenarios involving traditional knowledge associated with genetic resources which resulted in an in-depth discussion of the practical challenges of addressing traditional knowledge and how such challenges could be dealt with in the international regime. It is hoped that the outcomes will contribute to the on-going negotiations on the international regime on ABS under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
