The new database of Mediterranean MPAs is NOW online!

12 September 2008 | News story

The inventory of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) of the Mediterranean Sea has been recently updated and improved and the online database is freely searchable at www.medpan.org

The database is a result of a collaborative initiative made possible due to the networking activities of MedPAN, the network of managers of Mediterranean MPAs, under the coordination of WWF, and to the scientific and technical networks of IUCN, with the support of UNEP RAC/SPA.  It is the first survey of Mediterranean MPAs that includes a data collection of the management characteristics and it is based on questionnaire responds.  It involved the participation of MPA management bodies and agencies from 18 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
The database contains accurate data and useful information of individual MPAs. Users can search sites by country and, for each site, find information on its:

  • general characteristics (contacts, map, size, geographical coordinates, zonation, IUCN management category, legal references);
  • management (plan of management, enforcement and surveillance, equipment, staff, monitoring programme, and illegal activities.);
  • habitats and species currently under protection and health status of key ones;
  • main threats that affect the Mediterranean MPAs.

The main aim of the initiative was to provide an updated baseline to assess progress towards developing an ecologically representative and coherent network of MPAs in the Mediterranean Sea.  It is offered as a resource to MPA managers, institutions, scientists and decision-makers, but also the general public to know better the work done in the region on marine conservation.
