IUCN welcomes the Azerbaijan Ornithological Society (AOS) as its first NGO Member in Azerbaijan.
The application of AOS was approved by IUCN Council on 12 March 2008. Ramaz Gokhelashvili, Director of the IUCN Programme Office for the Southern Caucasus, welcomed the decision: “I am glad that we have won AOS, one of the longest established conservation NGOs in Azerbaijan, as a member. This is particularly important as Azerbaijan harbors an exceptionally rich biodiversity – at a pan-European scale – and at the same time has a rapidly developing economy. We look forward to supporting AOS and hopefully other important new members in Azerbaijan in their efforts to ensure sustainable development”.
AOS was established in 1986 and has 350 members. Its mission is to promote the conservation and the sustainable management of birds within their natural habitats, and to raise awareness for wild birds and their conservation. AOS is involved in ecological monitoring and research, public awareness campaigns and practical conservation projects related to rare and threatened birds. The society is the Birdlife International Affiliate in Azerbaijan.
