It seems in order to maintain some form of sustainability, certainly amongst the planets wildlife, we need to protect the environments in which they rely on to survive and it seems that at present this battle is being lost. From someone who is deeply involved with captive breeding I cannot understand why, when we have the knowledge, there is not more effort concentrated on creating captive bred populations so that if at some time in the distant future we are able to prevent or re-establish habitats we have a source of species for re-introduction.

There is far more understanding of propagation within the private sector with many species but this seems to be ignored. Sustainable use often goes hand in hand with commercial enterprise, there needs to be some kind of acceptance of this as something is more likely to survive if it has a commercial value.

There are many private individuals with the knowledge and ability to create captive bred populations but they are being prevented from doing so by CITES which has not kept up with the advances in captive breeding.
