The Future of Sustainability: Have Your Say! Week Two - “Human Wellbeing and Sustainability”
We would like to draw your attention to the work of the Poverty and Environment Partnership (PEP) in the context of this week’s theme: Human Wellbeing and Sustainability. The PEP is an informal network of development agencies which seeks to improve the coordination of work on poverty reduction and the environment within the framework of internationally agreed principles and processes for sustainable development. At the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, world leaders reiterated the principle that sound and equitable management of natural resources and ecosystem services is critical to sustained poverty reduction and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This reflects the important ways in which environmental conditions and access to environmental assets are linked to the livelihoods, health, security and empowerment of people living in poverty particularly women and children. Yet, in most countries, integrating the environmental concerns of poor and vulnerable groups into the mainstream of development planning and investment remains a major challenge. See www.povertyenvironment.net/pep for objectives, membership, details of meetings, work areas, publications, and case studies from around the world. ---- Estimados Participantes: como complemento para esta semana, nos gustaría comentarles sobre el trabajo que realiza la Alianza sobre Pobreza y Medio Ambiente (PEP por sus siglas en inglés). Esta alianza es una red informal de agencias de desarrollo que buscan mejorar la coordinación del trabajo en reducción de pobreza y ambiente en el marco de acuerdos internacionales y procesos de desarrollo sostenible. En la Cumbre Mundial sobre Desarrollo (Johannesburgo – 2002), los líderes mundiales reiteraron que para lograr los Objetivos de Desrrollo del Milenio (ODMs), es fundamental lograr un manejo de recursos naturales y servicios ecosistémicos como estrategia para la reducción sostenida de la pobreza. Este pronunciamiento refleja los profundos nexos entre las condiciones ambientales y el acceso a los recursos naturales con las condiciones de vida, la salud, la seguridad y el empoderamiento de la población pobre del mundo (especialmente mujeres y niños). Sin embargo para muchos países sigue siendo un gran desafío el integrar la temática ambiental en la planeación de sus estrategias nacionales de desarrollo.
