I think sustainability is more related to social awareness which in turn is not so much connected to scientific innovations or economic advancement. At least the developed societies in the modern world do not give impression of working at sustainable levels. On the other hand, we still have good examples of indegenous communities practicing sustainable use of natural resources.

Sustainability is also related to sprituality which is not regarded so high among the scientists community but works very well with the indegenous communities. Being in harmony with nature is sprituality (no relationship with any religion). A spiritual person consumes less and tends to be more rational in dealing with nature.

However, we do not see much of efforts towards arising awareness among the masses or take them to a spiritual way of life style. There are not many projects which deal with attitudnal changes among the humans. Even major disasters or calamities do not move the human mind into the realm of AWARENESS or SPIRITUALITY. A society based on consumptive uses of natural resources will keep on moving in the present manner till it is jolted by bigger disasters.

I firmly feel that sustainability be considered as a social paradigm with a great thrust on awareness and spirituality.
