Hot tips
South Africa is a hot destination – literally and figuratively. Make sure you read the following tips on most of the things you need to know to be prepared. November is slap bang in the middle of summer and a couple of weeks ahead of the annual summer holidays. So do not forget the following:
What to pack:
- Bring casual summer clothes – no more than 23Kg in total, please.
- A warm jersey/sweater would be useful for the cooler morning and evening temperatures.
- Cotton clothing in neutral colours is recommended for game drives and compulsory for walks. Keep whites to a minimum, as white attracts certain bugs at night.
- Comfortable walking shoes, track shoes or boots for the bush walks makes life so much easier.
- Sandals to wear around at meals, during the meeting and within the lodge area.
- Shorts for the walks and warm midday periods.
- Rainjacket, eventually umbrella as we might experience some rain showers.
- Swimming costumes.
- Sun block/sunhat/sunglasses/lip balm.
- Extra pair of correction glasses (if you wear them).
- Contact lens solution and an extra set of contact lenses (if required).
- Remember to pack your prescription medicine and a copy of your prescription – just in case.
- Cameras and binoculars.
- Alarm clock; the morning game drives start very early and there is no possibility for wake up calls from the camp staff.
- Video camera and perhaps a spare battery which can be recharged in your bungalow. Electricity is 220V – unfortunately we will not have any converters available.
- Last but not least, bring your laptop if at all possible (with a CD Rom reader incorporated; we would like to make it a paper-less meeting). Again, remember the converters!
We hope that this checklist will help with your packing. Formal attire is not required.
Weather
Temperatures during November can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius. Whilst Mopani has a swimming pool to cool off, it is not advisable to sunbath from 11:00 to 15:00 when the sun is at its harshest. Afternoons may be interrupted by a tempestuous African savanna thunder storm after which everything is fresh and cool.
What can you expect to find at Mopani Rest Camp?
Mopani is a government run accommodation facility for visitors to the Kruger National Park. It is not a luxury private game lodge, but your accommodation will be comfortable, convenient and an experience you will not forget.
Accommodation:
All accommodation has air-conditioning, private bathroom facilities, an outside seating area and a small kitchenette.
Common areas:
A restaurant, bar, and swimming pool is open all day. A shop stocked with snacks, curious and other articles are also conveniently located. |
